Check out the new DC Comics logo that leaked out the other day (which was met by many mixed reactions). Well it is now finally hit their website.

Check out: Their official announcement.

The logo, which was reportedly in the works for nearly a year, will debut on comic book covers this March. On the heels of that will be a new DC Entertainment website which will focus on the company’s entire slate of media offerings, expanding beyond its comic publishing line.

“We didn’t want a static logo, but a living identity that could capture the power of our characters and storytelling,” DC SVP of franchise management Amit Desai said in the story. “What is special about DC content is the notion of a dual identity. When you think about our DC Comics superheroes, there’s a secret identity. When you think about Vertigo, it’s this notion of good vs. evil in many of the stories. And so, in addition to flexibility, the new logo communicates this idea of dual identity: There’s more than meets the eye. You have to take a closer look to understand the richness of our characters and stories.”

The peel-back logo replaces the “DC Spin” which was introduced in 2005 to much fanfare as it replaced the “DC Bullet” which had been in place since 1977.

As someone who has moved on from collecting (other than my guilty pleasure of art and sketch books) I have fully embraced the new digital medium. A majority of what I read is no longer on paper or rather the accessibility is much easier now than it has ever been. This new logo design makes complete sense to me and as you can see in the examples given, a greater sense of design and customization is given for storytellers to play with.

Do you like comics? You want your friends to like comics too right? Well today is the big day. It is the launch of the new DC Universe. BANG! It just happened!
Many of you who are into comics already know this fact. But whether we like to admit it or not, we are the minority. To the non comic book reader today is no different than any other day. Do they know about the fact that they can download the new issue that just hit the stands? Unless they are already a fan, probably not.
I think this is the larger issue that needs to be addressed. A change in content is nice but ultimately I believe it is still catering to the small percentage of cool people that read comics and hopefully will continue to read comics. People just don’t know about it, or more importantly, care. Will this boost sales? Yes, but it will be most likely from the cross pollination of readers of other comic publishers like Marvel and alike.
As a comic book retailer, I used to take on the responsibility to create events and help reach the consumer. To give the public a peek of what it is like to be a comic book fan. The midnight release party idea is good (if that retailer ordered enough copies to qualify). But after talking to several different shops, it seems the same people are buying the books with a bit of misguided speculation thrown in for some short term added $$$.
This is not good.
What needs to happen is a combined movement. An effort by the comic book fans/community. As comic book fans we have to take the ball and pass it around. We need to give our good friend or friends who is not in to reading comics something to read. No, scratch that, we need to bring them down to our favorite comic book store and show them the ropes. Don’t rely on your store to try to reach them. Trust me they are busy enough just trying to stay afloat. Take the initiative and make your friends even cooler or at least a little more informed. Remember, reading is good but geeking is even better.

Over the next few months, Facebook will be archiving all groups created using the old groups format. So instead of automatically transferring you, they are making our lives difficult by forcing us to start over from scratch. I am sure they are hoping to gain more advertising sales as well by forcing every group to start at 0 members again. So after careful thought, we decided to change the group to a facebook page.

This was the sketch that was given away by Elfsar to a lucky winner at the 3D advance screening of THOR on May 4th at the Scotiabank Theatre in Vancouver, BC. I helped present the advance screening and could not resist promoting Free Comic Book Day (which was held the following Saturday, May 7th). I made sure to mention that RX Comics was running a fundraiser for the Vancouver Foodbank.

The sketch was totally inspired by an amazing Thor sketch by Michael Cornelius Suayan who was paying homage to Oliver Coipel’s rendition of Thor. His stuff makes my sketches look like crap. lol!

See more stuff on my Deviant Art page.

The picture above certainly fills me with memories. Last year was our last Free Comic Book Day event at our Yaletown location and although it was a tremendous amount of work to put together, it was also the most rewarding.

Okay, stop reading this and get your butt down to a participating retailer for Free Comic Book Day! For a list of locations near you: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/fcbd_locator.asp

Sadly Elfsar is unable to participate, but we did drop off a couple long boxes of kid friendly comics at the Ronald McDonald House this morning. So I still feel good about the day. I found out, that RX Comics is running a Food Fundraiser this year. So make sure to support those making the effort to go above and beyond the expectations for FCBD.
